Here to the New Year in Good Cheer – Plan “S”

Skipping to the front line of the Here to the New Year in Good Cheer challenge is the letter “S”, stacking one stone upon another in seasonal style.

There are several “s” words and ideas that strive to serve you. I could shower you with strategies that leave you staggering with a sprawling spread of spirited suggestions, but sticking to something more subtle suits us better.

You don’t need a series of solutions to get through the day. All that scheming, scripting, scouting, and scheduling may sacrifice your sanity. Where’s the satisfaction in that?

So without further speculating I shall spill the beans and sow the seeds of what I hope will be a shared sentiment.

Slowly succumb to the sights and sounds of your sacred space. If you can’t physically be there, go there in your mind. Soften your sharp edges. Seize the opportunity to shimmy, shake, shine, shout, or seek shelter in this place sanctioned solely for the spectacular surrendering of your stress.

It may seem silly or sound self-indulgent and you may be tempted to shrug it off.  Do it anyway. It will soothe your soul, sweet pea. Splurge. Savor. Soak it up.

You deserve some serious stress relief. And I’m here to see that you shift your sights slightly sideways so you might be seduced by a shameless sashay into a silent night – or seconds if that’s all you can sequester – to sleep, shop, or shovel snow in heavenly peace.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

It’s Day 17 of Get Stuff Done 1×31 Challenge and today’s challenge is to plant the seeds of an idea, a project, a goal, or a grand adventure and watch them grow.

No one was more shocked than me (okay, maybe my parents when they came to visit yesterday) to find these zucchinis and cucumbers growing like crazy in the makeshift garden Bob and I rigged up a month ago.

Growing up on a farm,the rhythm of planting and harvesting has been a constant throughout my life. It should come as no surprise that what we planted and dutifully cared for has come to fruition.

What is surprising is how much joy these veggies give me simply because they exist. Their transformation from a handful of seeds stuck in the mud to these enormous, edible specimens is nothing short of miraculous.

Too often I’m detached from all the hands that make it possible for the food I eat to end up on my table. I love frequenting farmers’ markets but often opt for the ease of the big box store that sells the same stuff regardless of the season.

During the eight months of my training to become a certified eating psychology coach, I thought more about food than I had at any previous point in my life. I noticed how it is grown, manufactured to last longer, distributed, stripped of its nutrients,  and “enhanced” to be more appealing. I paid attention to how much food we consume, waste, destroy, and produce. I became acutely aware of how we use food not only to feed and nourish ourselves but also punish and condemn ourselves,  hide our feelings, or protect ourselves from relentless stress.

The fact that I am growing greens on my own makes me confident that I can do just about anything I put on my Get Stuff Done 1×31 listif I give it some respect and attention.

If nothing comes to mind, use your 5-15 minutes for today’s task to think about what you’d like to grow in your garden. And by garden, what I really mean is your field of dreams.

(I realize I can get away with the Field of Dreams reference because I live in Iowa, but I really do want you to grow your dreams.  Or at least something you feel is as fabulous as I feel the zucchinis, cucumbers, and soon-to-be-ready tomatoes and peppers are.)

No Matter What – Day 13

G:  What’s your favourite season and type of weather?

P:  That would be autumn!  How I love the fall.  The leaves turn such vibrant shades of red, yellow, orange, and brown.  I love the crispness of the air.  I like to wear long pants and light sweaters.  I love to see pumpkins and Indian corn and haystacks and corn mazes and visit apples orchards and fall festivals.

If only the nights would get longer instead of shorter! However, early darkness makes for delightful bonfire weather and lends itself to stealth kisses on hayrack rides.

September feels more like the start of a new year to me than January.  Gearing up for  school and the influx of new students gives me an extra boost of energy.  Of course by Christmas break, I’m wiped out.  But I rally in autumn.

I also love the idea of harvest time.  It’s deeply satisfying to know that eventually hard work pays off and there is a time when we can reap the rewards of our efforts.

If midlife were a season, it would be autumn.  It’s easy to look back on spring chicken days or dare to bare summer days and think those were the glory days.  But truthfully, I’ve never been more comfortable in my skin, in my wisdom, in my choices, in my life in general as I am now.

I’ve spent my whole life seeking something that felt just beyond my grasp.  Finally this summer I’ve been able to connect the dots and see that in many ways I’ve arrived.  It’s time now to harvest the random seeds I’ve sown and scattered about over the years.  Some have grown into gifts I hardly recognize as mine.

And because I know what comes next, there is an urgency to be here now, fully present to this moment.  Appreciating these gifts is made more poignant by the fact that they are all impermanent.
